Share Our Strength, the wonderful organization that is conducting its chain-restaurant-based Dine Out philanthropic push this week, has provided me with several opportunities to see the good works it is doing to help battle childhood hunger.
I was moved deeply when I joined nationally known chefs to tour the New Orleans, La., area after the incredible devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. And in August, I was able to join foodservice executives and others involved in hunger causes to tour SOS’ efforts in my own back yard of Dallas.
These informational forays, called Hinges of Hope tours, draw on a wide variety of backgrounds and view a broad number of organizations that are working from the grass roots to fight hunger. We visited the No Kid Hungry Texas Campaign’s work at the Citysquare neighborhood food pantry in Dallas and heard from Americorp Volunteers.
Here’s the group, posed during a recap session after a tour of the summer feeding program of The Stewpot in Dallas, that toured with Share Our Strength:
